Product certifications shows us the commitment of the brand to quality and safety. It affirms that products have passed specific performance and quality assurance tests. Products without certifications are highly likely to be made from sub-standard components, that would fail product quality standards if they had been submitted for testing. Made Safe: One of the most comprehensive designations on the market, Made Safe screens products for flame retardants, carcinogens, heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, high-risk pesticides, and a variety of other toxins. Made Safe has a comprehensive Baby & Child product database. It also screens a variety of other products including mattresses and cleaning products.
EWG VERIFIED™: The Environmental Working Group maintains databases of the safest products available to consumers. More recently they launched a label to help consumers find these products at a glance. The label identifies healthy products for baby and kids, along with the safest products for hair, nails, and skin.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel: The Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified products meet requirements on chemical usage, resource consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity.
Asthma Allergy Nordic: The Asthma Allergy Nordic label is your guarantee that experts have reviewed the product’s list of ingredients and have determined that it does not contain substances that have a particular risk of allergy. Therefore, the risk is minimal for developing allergies.
Climate Pledge Friendly: Climate Pledge Friendly uses sustainability certifications to highlight products that support our commitment to help preserve the natural world.
Check if it is made out of plant-based materials
FSC Certified: Forest Management Certification is considered the “gold standard” designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.
Good manufacturing practice: Good manufacturing practice is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to high quality standards.
Leaping Bunny: indicates that the products are not tested on animals and are Cruelty Free.
Natural Product Association: indicates that the ingredients used are sourced from natural and organic products.
Certified Vegan: indicates that all the ingredients used are derived strictly from plants.
National Eczema Association: The Seal of Acceptance™ helps individuals recognize products that are suitable for care of eczema or sensitive skin. The presence of the NEA Seal of Acceptance™ logo will empower consumers to make informed purchase decisions to help manage eczema and sensitive skin.
USDA Certified Biobased Product: This label indicates a product contains USDA verified renewable biological ingredients. Biobased products come from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials. Watch for the percentage listed along with the label to see exactly what percent of bio-based ingredients exist in each product.
Ecocert: It’s a rigorous process that consists of an independent and impartial certification body assessing the conformity of a product, service or system with environmental and social requirements specified in a standard. At the end of the certification process, Ecocert issues a decision and when positive, delivers a written assurance called a certificate.
TUV Austria: A TUV certification means a sampling of the product has been tested for safety and found to meet the minimum requirements of the German Equipment and Product Safety Act.
Non–GMO: means a product was produced without genetic engineering and its ingredients are not derived from GMOs.
Check if the baby products are allergen-free
Allergy UK: reassures consumers that the product has been assessed by leading healthcare specialists, and approved by a trusted organization who specialize in helping people affected by allergy.
Dermatest is an internationally renowned company based in Germany which tests products for dermatological tolerance. This means Dermatest checks how the skin reacts to a product.
Harmful substances to lookout for
BPA, PVC, DEHP & Phthalate Free: indicates that the product is free from harmful plastic substances. These chemicals are used back from 1950s and are linked to severe illnesses like cancer, hormone disruption, infertility, and problems with liver and kidney function.
Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives to inhibit bacterial growth. They are linked to hormone disruption and breast cancer tumors cases.
SLS is a “moderate hazard” that has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation and endocrine disruption.
